On today’s installment of “The Male Perspective,” Bro. Jay Watkins represents Beta Mu Lambda Chapter.
Located in the oldest continuously populated colonial town in the western region of North Carolina sits Beta Mu Lambda, the 155th House of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
This chapter has served Iredell, Rowan and Cabarrus counties by organizing holiday turkey giveaways, participating in school supply drives, and “Adopt a Family ” programs which provide clothes and toys to families in need. As part of the Alpha Phi Alpha nationwide “A Voteless People is a Hopeless People” initiative, Beta Mu Lambda created “Party at the Polls” events to provide voter education and registration in their local community.

“Alpha Phi Alpha™, the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for African American Men, was founded on December 4, 1906™ at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York by seven college men who recognized the need for a strong bond of brotherhood among African descendants in this country.
The fraternity initially served as a study and support group for minority students who faced racial prejudice, both educationally and socially, at Cornell. The Jewel founders and early leaders of the fraternity succeeded in laying a firm foundation for Alpha Phi Alpha’s principles of scholarship, fellowship, good character, and the uplifting of humanity.” (apa1906.net)
“The Male Perspective” is hosted by Lana Reid, the founder of Conversations in Color, a nonprofit 501(c)3 grassroots organization dedicated to providing uplifting and community building spaces of dialogue for Black voices.
Conversations in Color’s Current Initiatives:
- THE MALE PERSPECTIVE: The purpose of “The Male Perspective” is to dispel stereotypes and increase awareness of the experiences of Black men through open discussions, thought-provoking interviews, and sharing personal experiences that serve as a platform to highlight the diversity and depth of the Black male experience.
- SISTAS REBUILDING SISTERHOOD: “Sistas Rebuilding Sisterhood,” is an intergenerational group of Black women who come together for relaxed and non-judgmental gatherings to exchange ideas, experiences and collaborate in a collective effort to improve the quality of sisterhood interactions in our day to day lives.
- KNOW YOUR NEIGHBOR : “Know Your Neighbor” community engagement will aim to foster connectivity and a sense of community in local neighborhoods through our video contest. The program seeks to encourage interaction among neighbors in their immediate area and create a sense of community that can lead to thriving, connected and safer areas.
