The Link Between Sports, Education, and Black Genius | Dr. Dwayne B. Thomas
By Lana Reid | March 25, 2026
As part of the Black Men Matter Series, Lana Reid sits down with Dr. Dwayne B. Thomas, founder of Thomas Leadership Solutions, LLC and The Academic, Coaching, Enrichment, & Sports (ACES) Network, to examine the relationship between sports, education, and Black intellectual development. A former United States Marine, educator, and leadership strategist, Dr. Thomas explains why strategic thinking celebrated in athletics is often overlooked when it appears in classrooms. Drawing from decades of work across education, sports, and leadership development, he argues that many Black students possess intellectual strengths that traditional systems have not fully recognized.

In this episode of The Male Perspective, Dr. Dwayne B. Thomas explores how athletic thinking, leadership instincts, and academic potential are often more connected than many educational systems acknowledge.
Dr. Thomas reflects on how his own early exposure to sports shaped the way he learned long before those observations became formal educational frameworks. He explains that many of the strategic decisions athletes make in real time – reading patterns, anticipating outcomes, adapting quickly, and leading under pressure – reflect intellectual abilities that are often praised on the field but dismissed in academic spaces.
Throughout the conversation, Lana Reid and Dr. Thomas discuss how these observations eventually helped shape frameworks such as SportsGeniusโข and Same Brain, Different Geniusโข. These ideas challenge narrow definitions of intelligence by recognizing that students often demonstrate advanced reasoning and cognitive ability in environments that schools do not traditionally measure.
Dr. Thomas also discusses how his work has connected educational disparities with untapped intellectual capital in Black communities. He argues that many students labeled as disengaged may instead be demonstrating intelligence through forms that educators have not been trained to recognize or cultivate.
The discussion broadens into leadership development, youth potential, and how communities can better identify strengths that already exist within Black students and young athletes. Dr. Thomas emphasizes that when educators and mentors learn to recognize these patterns differently, they create stronger pathways for academic success and long-term leadership.
This episode offers a powerful rethinking of intelligence, achievement, and how Black genius often appears in forms institutions have historically overlooked.
