As part of the Black Men Matter Series, Lana Reid sits down with Darryl Russell Smith Jr., speaker, entrepreneur, and creator of the GRIT brand, to explore how accountability, discipline, resilience, and honest conversation can change the direction of a person’s life. Drawing from more than 20 years in mortgage banking, a diverse entrepreneurial career, and a personal journey that required rebuilding after a criminal conviction at 19, Darryl shares how both his successes and failures helped shape the philosophy behind the GRIT Conversation. His story challenges the idea that a person’s worst decision must determine the rest of their life and instead asks what becomes possible when people take responsibility for where they have been and intentionally decide where they are going next.

In this episode of The Male Perspective, Darryl Russell Smith Jr. shares a story about accountability, entrepreneurship, resilience, and what it means to build something greater from the totality of one’s experiences.
Darryl’s professional journey includes more than 20 years in mortgage banking before he transitioned into entrepreneurship. His ventures have crossed several industries, including transportation, vehicle rentals, business consulting, AI automation, and media. Those experiences provided lessons not only about business and leadership, but also about discipline, adaptability, failure, and the willingness to keep learning.
Those lessons eventually became part of the foundation for GRIT, a brand that includes the GRIT Conversation and GRIT IP Group. Darryl’s approach centers on the belief that meaningful conversations can become catalysts for change when they are paired with personal accountability and action.
Throughout the conversation, Lana Reid and Darryl explore what GRIT means beyond simply pushing through difficult circumstances. His message asks people to examine their decisions, take ownership of their choices, and recognize the role discipline plays in moving from intention to meaningful change.
Darryl’s perspective is deeply connected to his own past. At 19, he was convicted of first-degree robbery and armed criminal action. Rather than attempting to separate that chapter from the person he became, Darryl incorporates it into his story. The experience becomes part of a larger conversation about consequences, responsibility, rebuilding, and the possibility of creating a life that is not permanently defined by an earlier decision.
His willingness to discuss both accomplishments and failures is central to the GRIT Conversation. Darryl draws lessons from his career, entrepreneurship, family, faith, setbacks, and successes to explore larger questions surrounding resilience, leadership, purpose, and legacy.
The discussion also examines the value of conversation itself. Darryl believes honest dialogue can help people confront difficult truths, recognize patterns in their lives, and begin making different choices. But conversation alone is not the destination. His work is designed to move individuals and organizations toward actionable change.
Through keynotes, workshops, leadership summits, and facilitated conversations, Darryl brings this message to corporations, schools, athletic programs, nonprofits, faith-based organizations, and community groups. While the audiences may differ, the underlying challenge remains similar: What responsibility do we have for the direction of our own lives, and what are we willing to do differently once we recognize that responsibility?
Ultimately, Darryl’s story demonstrates that accountability and possibility can exist together. Acknowledging the past does not require remaining trapped within it. Through discipline, reflection, purposeful action, and meaningful conversation, people can use what they have lived through as material for building something greater.
