As part of the Black Men Matter Series, Lana Reid sits down with Wyatt O’Brian Evans, journalist, author, radio personality, and Intimate Partner Violence and Abuse (IPV/A) subject matter expert and advocate, to discuss his latest novel, Nothing Can Tear Us Apart: RUTHLESS!. The fourth installment in his Nothing Can Tear Us Apart series follows Wesley and Antonio, two men of color navigating love, trauma, and the complexities of a committed, monogamous relationship. Drawing from his work as an advocate and his own experience as an IPV/A survivor, Wyatt also examines why abuse involving men can go unrecognized and how expectations surrounding masculinity can make it more difficult for male survivors to acknowledge abuse, seek help, and speak openly about what they have experienced.
In this episode of The Male Perspective, Wyatt O’Brian Evans explores the intersection of storytelling, trauma, intimate partner violence and abuse, and the representation of LGBTQ+ people of color.
Wyatt discusses his novel Nothing Can Tear Us Apart: RUTHLESS!, the fourth installment in a series centered on Wesley and Antonio. Through the two characters, Wyatt portrays men of color navigating the complexities of love and maintaining a committed, monogamous relationship while confronting difficult personal and interpersonal challenges.
Throughout the conversation, Lana Reid and Wyatt explore his approach to character development and the process of building characters who are multidimensional rather than defined solely by race, sexuality, trauma, or other aspects of identity. Wyatt explains his commitment to creating LGBTQ+ characters of color whose relationships and lives extend beyond familiar stereotypes.
RUTHLESS! tackles difficult subjects, including trauma, mental health, family dynamics, healing, forgiveness, and intimate partner violence and abuse. Wyatt discusses how fiction can provide a vehicle for examining these issues while allowing readers to connect with characters and circumstances on a personal level.
The conversation then moves beyond the novel into Wyatt’s advocacy surrounding Intimate Partner Violence and Abuse (IPV/A). Drawing from his own experience as a survivor, as well as his work as a journalist and advocate, Wyatt discusses the prevalence of IPV/A and some of the misconceptions that can prevent abuse between men from being recognized or taken seriously.
A central part of the discussion focuses on masculinity. Men are often taught to associate strength with toughness, silence, and the ability to handle problems on their own. Wyatt explores how those expectations can create additional barriers for male survivors who may struggle to identify what is happening to them as abuse or feel reluctant to disclose their experiences and seek assistance.
The conversation also considers how attitudes toward masculinity begin developing long before adulthood. Wyatt challenges the familiar phrase “boys will be boys” and discusses why conversations about healthy behavior, accountability, boundaries, and relationships need to begin when boys are young rather than after harmful patterns have already become established.
Through both his fiction and advocacy, Wyatt brings attention to experiences that can remain hidden when conversations about intimate partner violence rely on narrow assumptions about who can be a victim, who can be an abuser, and what an abusive relationship looks like.
This episode offers an important conversation about love, trauma, masculinity, representation, and the need to recognize male survivors as part of the broader discussion surrounding intimate partner violence and abuse.
About the Guest
Wyatt O’Brian Evans is a journalist, author, radio personality, and Intimate Partner Violence and Abuse (IPV/A) subject matter expert and advocate. An IPV/A survivor himself, Wyatt uses journalism, advocacy, speaking, and fiction to increase awareness of intimate partner violence and challenge misconceptions surrounding male survivors. He is the author of the Nothing Can Tear Us Apart series, including its fourth installment, Nothing Can Tear Us Apart: RUTHLESS!
